A man, a guitar and a hundred year old church are the makings of an interesting evening. The amazing sound was worth every ounce of effort. I was dying to check out Jose Gonzalez and Mia Doi Todd at St. Andrew Wesley United Church and finding a way in on the day-of was a blessing. There are several old churches in London and Scotland that have been renovated to become bars and lounges, but it was cool to absorb this show in my own backyard. Jose was born in Sweden and his life and style is infused with Argentinian culture. Accompanied by Mia Doi Todd and a gentle percussionist, this show was as organic as you could muster. The ode to fellow Swedish musicians The Knife on Heartbeats has been heard around the world but not like it was played in Vancouver. Sure Vancouver isn't steeped in tradition or religious melancholy, but this was a "once in a lifetime" experience. I don't know if it was the space or the music or both but it was breathtaking nonetheless.
