Jamie Lidell in Vancouver

Jamie Lidell puts all these neo-soul and Sam & Dave impersonators to shame! If you knew nothing about Jamie and saw him for the first time you might think he was simply a geeky looking white guy, but I don't know how else to say it - he just has it. Moreover, he has taken note of the little things that made soul and R&B singers of the '60s so cool...so unique. While certain artists try to immitate a sound, Jamie has the feel. And when you see him live with his band, they seem authentic, not contrived. His bassist and saxophonist look like part of the Family Stone...and act like it too. The bassist was smiling like the Koolaid Man the whole show. At one point Jamie started waling into a Vocoder and after a minute or two his Black Moses-look alike saxophonist grabbed his Vocoder and they had a computer-ised (read: like Zapp would sing it) throwdown! You always hope an artist will give you something more than just a regurgiation of the album in concert. Well, Jamie Lidell hits you with what might as well be a remix version of Jim. Every song is changed-up, added-to, or extended! I don't know how much more I can say without feeling like a jocker, so I'll end by stating album or show, Jamie will entertain you.
