The story here sounds interesting, the cast is top notch, Clooney has a great track record as a director, but The Monuments Men still seems to lack a pulse. Now, while that partly alludes to the mostly aging cast, the movie as a whole is missing that “oomph” you expect from a war film. Also, when you have comedic talents like Bill Murray, John Goodman, and Bob Balaban (Moonrise Kingdom), you need to utilize them properly, or you might as well have got some typecast war guys like Tom Sizemore (Black Hawk Down) or Neal McDonough (Flags of Our Fathers).

A team of artisans and art historians come together to help the US military secure the masterpieces stolen by the Nazis from across Europe. They have to endure bootcamp and become proper soldiers to successfully carry out their mission. How could this not be entertaining right? I’ll tell you how, Matt Damon and George Clooney are just too…them. They do not stray far from their usual smiles and charm, and their attempts at dry humour are god awful. I would say this is the only fail in the handful of movies Clooney has directed thus far. He usually seems to have a good sense for an intriguing story and tends to cast engaging actors.

Just a suggestion, but I think Clooney needs to pick something completely out of his comfort zone for his next directing gig…CG animation? Or space-based horror maybe? Or maybe just a drama that is not period, that he doesn’t act in. Anyways, if you are looking for a good war movie or a good comedy, neither can be found here.
