There must be a point in every Hollywood movie producer’s career when they are faced with the decision to either pursue the development of a questionable script or keep looking for something good.

When a proposal to make a movie like Horrible Bosses 2 shows up, it’s understandable that it would be given the greenlight after how popular and financially successful the original became (taking in over $200 million from a $30-something million budget). With such funny and popular stars like Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston, Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day, Kevin Spacey, and Jamie Foxx back on board for another round, along with some fresh blood in the show-stealing form of Christoph Waltz and Chris Pine, Horrible Bosses 2 probably seemed like a good idea on paper. Take the same characters, flip the storyline and have them become their own version of “horrible bosses", laugh all the way to the bank. Unfortunately though, even with the massive profits they raked in with the first flick, New Line Cinema is likely regretting this outing. Feeling forced and tired, the plot is not only predictable but also kind of boring. Certainly there were a few moments that generated some genuine laughter, unfortunately they were few and far between for me.

Horrible Bosses 2 had the potential to enter a realm of sequels that were greater than their predecessors, like Terminator 2 and the The Empire Strikes Back. Sadly though it will be added to a long list of sequels that didn’t really need to be, like Roadhouse 2 and another movie that Jason Bateman starred in, Teen Wolf Too.
