Philthy Rich - Funk Or Die

The Hyphy movement provided a good platform for a wide assortment of Bay Area artists. Now that the hype has died down, you might think that Oaktown doesn't have much more to offer, but you'd be wrong. It seems as though heads have returned to their roots and turned the G factor back up. One dude who's really buzzin' these days is Philthy Rich, an indie emcee from the Golden State who recently released a new album called Funk Or Die. A Town Thizzness release, Funk Or Die definitely stays true to the mold that was forged by Cokeland pioneers Too $hort, E-40 and Mac Dre. Philthy knows his audience and he doesn't disappoint with his new CD. There's a whole lot of guests on the tracks, including some dope verses from a couple well known cats like Yukmouth and Clyde Carson, along with some lesser known spitters. There's also tight beats from some Yay Area favorites like DJ Fresh and Mekanix. But don't get it twisted, Philthy Rich holds it down on his own and has no trouble convincing you that he lives the life he raps about and is down for whatever. I heard he even got some shine in a National Geographic documentary called Gang Wars: Oakland so you know his stripes are legit. Go cop Funk Or Die and get a feel for what some real certified Oakland street music sounds like.
